Your essay plan
SECTION BY SECTION
Opening — the moment it became a question
Open with the fruit market, not with economics. One or two sentences of the scene: the two stalls selling identical mangoes at different prices, and the busier stall being the more expensive one.
Then ask the question you actually asked: why didn't the cheaper stall win? That question — not a definition of supply and demand — is your way into the subject.
Kill any temptation to start with 'From a young age' or a famous economist's quote. Your own observation is stronger than both.
Academic engagement — show the follow-through
Connect the market question to what you did about it: reading on behavioural pricing and why buyers treat price as a signal of quality.
Name one specific idea that changed your thinking — anchoring, or price-as-signal — and say what it explained about the mango stall that A-level theory didn't.
This section should prove the interest survived contact with actual study. One book or paper discussed properly beats four titles listed.
Your EPQ — the centrepiece
Your EPQ on whether congestion charging would work in your home city is the strongest single item you have. Give it the most space of any paragraph.
Structure it as question → method → limitation: what you asked, how you compared the London and Singapore schemes, and what data you couldn't get for your home city.
The limitation is not a weakness — say explicitly what it taught you about evidence in economics. Admissions tutors read that as maturity.
Maths and Physics — make them work for you
Don't describe Maths and Physics separately from Economics. Pick the one genuine crossover: using calculus from Maths to understand marginal analysis properly.
One sentence on Physics is enough — modelling assumptions and when they break is a shared habit of mind with economic models.
Cut anything that reads as 'I also study…'. Every subject mentioned must earn its place by feeding the economics argument.
Beyond the classroom — evidence, then close
Use the maths tutoring as your skills evidence: explaining one concept three different ways to three different students is genuine communication practice — say it that concretely.
The society-treasurer role earns one sentence, tied to handling a real budget, not to the title.
Close by looking forward, not backward: the specific kind of question you want the degree to equip you to answer. Do not summarise the essay you just wrote.
WATCH OUT FOR THESE
Your first answer leaned on a well-known pop-economics book as the origin of your interest. Roughly a third of economics applicants cite the same book — the market stall story is yours alone, so build the statement on that instead.
Don't let the congestion-charging EPQ become a paragraph about traffic. Keep every sentence of it pointed at the economics: incentives, pricing, and what evidence would settle the question.
You listed four extracurriculars in your answers. The plan uses two. Resist re-adding the others — a UCAS statement with two developed examples reads stronger than one with six mentions.
