What LUMS is actually evaluating

LUMS's application includes a personal essay alongside short-answer prompts, and both are read for the same underlying thing: evidence of how you think, not a summary of what you have done. A reader with hundreds of applications from Pakistani O/A-level and matric students has seen every version of "hardworking and passionate" already. What gets attention is specificity - a real moment, a real decision, a real piece of reasoning that is yours and could not have been written by the next applicant in the pile.

This matters more for LUMS than it does for a numbers-only admissions process, because LUMS explicitly weighs the essay as part of a holistic file. A strong transcript with a generic essay is a weaker application than the same transcript with an essay that actually shows judgement.

The mistake almost every Pakistani applicant makes

The single most common failure in LUMS essays is listing achievements instead of extracting insight from them. "I organised my school's charity drive and raised 200,000 rupees" is an activity. It is not, by itself, an essay. The question a reviewer should be asking of every sentence is: what did this teach you that you didn't already know, and can you show it rather than assert it?

The second most common failure is over-explaining why LUMS specifically is prestigious. Readers at LUMS know what LUMS is. Spending a paragraph on the university's reputation, rankings, or faculty tells them nothing about you. That space should go to your own material instead.

Family business and local context: an asset, if it's specific

Many LUMS applicants have genuinely differentiating material available - a family business, an unusual home city, a specific local issue they have direct exposure to - and most of them underuse it. "I helped in my father's business" is a fact. "I noticed our supplier relationships ran on trust rather than contracts, and started wondering why formal enforcement mattered less than informal reputation in our market" is an insight. The difference between the two is the entire difference between a forgettable essay and a strong one.

What a real essay review should catch

• Claims without evidence - "I am a natural leader" with nothing behind it
• Activity lists dressed up as reflection - a paragraph of what you did with no "so what"
• Generic passion statements that any applicant to any subject could write
• Essays that explain LUMS's reputation instead of your own thinking
• Short answers that repeat the personal essay instead of adding new material

A good review does not just flag typos. It tells you which paragraphs are doing real work and which ones are filler that a reader will skim past - and then helps you replace the filler with the specific, evidenced material you actually have.
