Personal Statement vs Common App Essay: Applying to Both

Applies toπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

A large share of international applicants hedge across both systems in the same season. Almost all of them try to reuse one essay for the other, because the two look superficially alike β€” a piece of personal writing, roughly the same length, submitted with an application. They are close to opposites, and the failure is usually invisible to the person doing it.

The two briefs, side by side

A UCAS personal statement argues that you are prepared for one subject. It goes to five universities all considering you for the same course, and since 2026 it is three separate answers rather than one essay. It is, in effect, an academic case.

A Common App essay shows an admissions officer who you are as a person. It goes to every college on your list, most of which admit to the institution rather than to a major. It is 650 words, and your academic case is already made by your transcript, your scores, your recommendations and your activities list.

  • UCAS assesses subject fit; the Common App assesses the person
  • UCAS rewards evidence of reading and thinking in a discipline; the Common App rewards self-knowledge and voice
  • UCAS wants what you have concluded; the Common App is comfortable with what you have not
  • UCAS is impersonal by convention; the Common App fails without a specific person on the page
  • UCAS names no university; the Common App is followed by supplements that must name one specifically

What happens when you send the wrong one

A UCAS statement submitted as a Common App essay reads as a rΓ©sumΓ© in prose: competent, credential-heavy, and empty of anybody. It is one of the most common reasons strong international candidates get thin outcomes in the US, because every other part of their file is excellent and the essay adds nothing.

A Common App essay reworked into a UCAS statement fails the other way. It reads as personal writing with no subject case β€” warm, well-observed, and offering a tutor no evidence that you have engaged with the course. Reflection is not a substitute for having read something.

Both failures are hard to see yourself, because in each case the document is genuinely good. It is simply answering the wrong question.

What can actually be reused

Not the writing. The raw material.

The same summer job can appear in both, doing entirely different work. In the UCAS statement it demonstrates something about how you think in your subject β€” a pricing decision you watched, a system that failed and why. In the Common App essay the same job is a place where something happened between you and another person, and the subject is irrelevant.

So the reusable layer is your inventory of experiences, not your paragraphs. Build the list once, then write twice from it. Applicants who try to edit one document into the other almost always end with a compromise that satisfies neither.

The order to write them in

Write the Common App essay first, even if your UK deadline comes sooner. It is the harder document β€” it has no template and no criteria you can look up β€” and drafting it forces you to work out what you actually have to say. The UCAS statement is easier to write afterwards, because the material is already surfaced.

Deadlines overlap uncomfortably. Early Decision and Early Action fall in early November; the standard UCAS deadline is late January, with mid-October for Oxbridge and medicine. If you are applying to Oxbridge and to US early rounds, both land in the same fortnight, and that is the crunch to plan around rather than discover.

One thing that is the same

Specificity, in both systems, is the whole game. A UCAS tutor and a US admissions officer are looking for different things, but both are drowning in generality β€” asserted passion, unevidenced qualities, sentences that would fit any applicant.

If a sentence in either document could have been written by somebody else, it is not working. That single test transfers across both, and it is most of what separates the statements that land from the ones that do not.
