How to Write a Personal Statement for Maths at LSE, King's, Warwick, or UCL

"Maths is the language of the universe" and "I have always loved numbers" are the two sentences a maths admissions tutor could recite from memory. Neither says anything a tutor can evaluate. A maths degree is three years of proof, abstraction, and problems that resist the tools you already have - and the statement needs to show you've met that kind of difficulty before, not that you're fond of the subject.

Why maths - a problem, not a compliment to the subject

Being "good at maths" is not a reason to study it - it's a precondition for applying at all, and tutors assume it from your grades. What they're reading for is a specific moment where a result stopped being a technique to apply and became a question you couldn't let go of: why a proof works and not just that it does, what happens when you push a theorem past the conditions it assumes, why an elegant identity is true rather than merely correct.

Further maths content is a strong source of this if you go past using the method to asking what's underneath it. Complex numbers, matrices, proof by induction, an early taste of calculus of variations - pick one place where you stopped and asked "wait, why does that work," and build from there. That single moment of genuine confusion resolving into understanding is worth more than any declaration of enthusiasm.

Academic preparation - proof, not procedure

University maths is proof-based in a way A-level rarely is, and the statement should show you've had a taste of that shift. If you've read beyond the syllabus - a book on number theory, an introduction to group theory, a paper or article on a specific unsolved or recently solved problem - say what you understood and, just as importantly, what you didn't and how you worked at it. Naming a topic is nothing; describing where you got stuck and how you reasoned your way further is everything.

Competition maths is strong, verifiable evidence if you have it: the UK Senior Maths Challenge, BMO, an olympiad, a named result or score. Don't just list the competition - describe one problem from it that actually taught you something about how to think, not just that you solved it.

If you've done any independent exploration - an EPQ, a coding project that visualised a mathematical structure, an attempt to prove something on your own - describe the specific point where your intuition and the actual mathematics disagreed, and what you did about it.

Beyond education - keep it mathematical

The third question matters less for maths than the academic evidence, but don't waste it on generic leadership language. Tutoring younger students, running a maths club, mentoring for a challenge - the useful version says what explaining a specific concept to someone else revealed about your own understanding of it. Drop generic award-scheme mentions if they're your only evidence; they carry almost no weight for a maths application on their own.

What good looks like

A strong maths statement reads like someone who has already sat with a hard idea long enough to be confused by it, then worked through the confusion. You name a specific result or problem, not a general fondness for the subject, and you can describe the moment your understanding actually shifted. That is the entire signal a tutor is looking for.
