How the UCAS limit works

For 2027 entry, the UCAS personal statement is three questions answered separately, sharing one limit of 4,000 characters. Spaces and punctuation count. The questions themselves do not.

Each answer has to be at least 350 characters, but beyond that the split is yours. Most strong statements give the first question, why this subject, the largest share, because it is the one every admissions tutor reads first and the one generic statements handle worst.

Why a word count can mislead you

A word count tells you very little about whether you fit. 600 words of short, plain sentences and 600 words of long academic vocabulary can be several hundred characters apart. Students who draft against a word target are often surprised when the UCAS form cuts them off.

Count characters from the start, and count each answer on its own, so you are never trimming a strong paragraph at the last minute to make room for a weak one.

Common App: a word limit instead

The Common App personal essay is limited by words, not characters: 650 at most, and at least 250. Switch the counter to Common App mode to check it. Supplemental essays have their own limits, set by each college.

Common questions

What is the UCAS personal statement character limit?

4,000 characters in total, including spaces, shared across the three questions. Each answer must be at least 350 characters. The question text does not count toward the limit.

Do spaces count in the UCAS character count?

Yes. UCAS counts every character you type, including spaces and punctuation, which is why a word count is an unreliable guide. Paste your answers into the counter above to see the exact figure.

How many words is 4,000 characters?

Roughly 550 to 700 words, depending on how long your words are. That range is too wide to plan with, so count characters rather than words.

What is the Common App essay word limit?

The Common App personal essay must be between 250 and 650 words. Supplemental essays are set by each college and are often much shorter.

Is my statement saved when I use the counter?

No. The counting happens in your browser. Nothing you paste into the counter is stored or sent anywhere.
